Railway board draws up plan for clean trains, stations

Cleanliness, a sore point of the railways, is getting a shot in the arm. If officials are to be believed, the wheels have already started moving in that direction and changes will be visible in a month.

Though there have been endeavours in bits and pieces, it has never fallen into place perfectly, officials said. They hope that the first comprehensive plan drawn up by the Railway Board will act like a guide on sanitation and cleanliness for stations and their surroundings.

Railway officials said the plan included on-the-job training courses and workshops for safaiwalas to inculcate in them the need for a cleaner environment as well as joint drives with municipal corporations to keep the surroundings of station premises neater. Both these would also be firsts. "The plan will also include mechanised cleaning, ragpicking and garbage cleaning at stations,'' the officials said.

Besides this, litter bins will be provided at all stations and the maximum distance between two bins will be two train coaches.

"An action plan for disposal of refuse and sewage in a scientific manner will be drawn up. The divisional railway manager would be able to delegate powers to purchase equipment and execute various contracts related to cleanliness. A supervisory team has also made arrangements for necessary tools and equipment,'' he said.

The process of providing rag-picking contracts for 19 stations between Masjid and Thakurli and Vithalwadi to Khandala and Shahad and Kasar will be finalised by October end. Also, 46 new health inspectors have been sanctioned in addition to the present 19.
